We cannot deny that plastic has many benefits, but plastic breaks down into tiny particles, called microplastics, so small we can’t see them. They are everywhere invading our world, in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe, leading scientists to discover microplastics in human blood and brain tissue. This cannot be good for us.
While that might sound alarming, there is a lot we can do to reduce our exposure and support our body’s natural detox systems with simple swaps.
- Switch to a water filter, ideally reverse osmosis, to reduce microplastics in your drinking water.
- Avoid heating food in plastic and hot drinks in takeaway cups, use glass, ceramic or stainless-steel containers instead.
- Choose natural fibres like cotton or bamboo over polyester and nylon.
- Be mindful of teabags, clingfilm, and takeaway packaging, many contain hidden plastics.
- Eat a colourful, fibre-rich diet to support your gut and detox pathways.
Plastic is part of modern life, and it’s not going away any time soon, but by becoming more aware, we can make informed choices that protect our health and the planet, too.
